Welcome and Introduction. Dolphins are among the most
intelligent, elegant, and captivating mammals on earth.
The bonds between mother dolphins and their calves are very strong, close, and beautiful. Stories have been told of how a mother dolphin, in a highly agitated state, will try to revive her dead calf for hours. Other stories tell how a mother and child, separated by thunderstorms, will find each other days later and have a loving reunion. A mother and calf may swim together, side by side, for many years. Calves might eventually leave their mothers but will probably stay in touch for the rest of their lives.
Young dolphins also form lifelong bonds with other members of mother calf groups
and are given lifelong protection. Sometimes a group of mother dolphins will
form a half-circle playpen where their "children" can safely play.
